Het was vorig jaar aangenaam kennis maken met de Britse nieuweling Ben Tulett. De Britse titel en een vijfde plaats in Zonnebeke toonde dan ook dat de jonge snaak over heel wat talent beschikt. Tulett staat nu voor een belangrijke en drukke zomer om het volgende winter nog beter te doen.
“Het zomerseizoen begint in april. Het is vanaf nu dat ik werk richting de hoofddoelen voor mijn weg- en mountainbikeseizoen”, vertelt Tulett. “Om te beginnen zal ik deelnemen aan de eerste twee manches van de ‘British national MTB-series.”
“Daarna zak ik naar België af voor de interclub Herman Vanspringels Diamond. Dit alles met het oog op de nationale kampioenschappen op de weg en in het mountainbiken die in juli plaatsvinden. Daarna volgt er de jeugdtour in Assen.”
En het blijft druk. “In augustus hoop ik geselecteerd te worden voor de ronde van West-Vlaanderen. Daarna schakel ik opnieuw over naar het veldrijden. Ik kijk er nu al naar uit om weer op de crossfiets te springen.”
Duidelijk heel wat wedstrijden in België en Nederland. Niet onlogisch. “De wedstrijden in België en Nederland zijn bijna altijd op een afgesloten omloop. Er zit ook vaak een heuvel of klim in en dan kan ik altijd beter uit de voeten.”
“Veldrijden is speciaal voor de hele familie”
Na die drukke zomer concentreert Tulett zich dus weer op het veldrijden. “Dat betekent meer specifiekere trainingen met verschillende andere renners. Die trainingen helpen mij om mijn snelheid en techniciteit te verbeteren.”
“En het doet me er ook gewoon aandenken hoe taai veldrijden wel is, maar ook hoe hard ik er van geniet. Het veldrijden is trouwens heel speciaal in de familie. Elf jaar geleden begon ik met veldrijden, samen met mijn broer Daniel. Ook voor mama is het speciaal. Zij gebruikt wel heel veel was poeder gedurende de wintermaanden”, lacht de Brit.
“Zoveel mogelijk naar België en Nederland afzakken”
Vorig jaar kwam Tulett al enkele keren naar België, volgend jaar zal dat nog meer zijn. “Ik geniet van het competitieve en de goede organisaties in België en Nederland. Ik hou er ook van om te reizen en om nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten.”
“De wedstrijden in België geven altijd een speciale uitdaging en ik durf te zeggen dat ik zelfs gepassioneerd ben door het Belgische veldrijden. En voor we naar huis gaan, kijken we naar de elites. Die geven mij de motivatie om ervoor te werken om later even goed te worden”, besluit Tulett.

It was a nice acquaintance with Ben Tulett last year for the Belgian cyclocross world. His win in the British Championships and a fifth place in the Kasteelcross in Zonnebeke showed Tullet has a lot of talent. Now there’s a busy and important summer coming to become better and better for the next cyclocross season.
“The season starts off in April where I can start to work towards my main goals for the road and MTB season”, tells Tullet. “I will be competing in the first two rounds of the British National MTB series.”
“Afterwards, I will come to Belgium to ride the interclub Herman Vanspringels Diamond. The main goals for me will be the National Championships for the MTB and road. These take place in July. Following this I will be heading out to the European Junior Cycling Tour in Assen.”
End it stays busy. “I am hoping to be selected for the West-Flanders Cycling Tour. After that I will switch over again to cyclocross. It is always exciting to start training on my cyclocross bike and it is a time I really look forward to.”
Clearly a lot of races in Belgium and The Netherlands. And it’s not illogic. “I enjoy racing the National Youth Circuit Series races in the UK but I often find the races in Europe to be more exciting as we are able to ride on closed roads . I always ride well if there is a hill in a race or a climb.”
“Me and my family are dedicated to cyclocross”
After that busy summer, Tulett focuses again on cyclocross. “That means a return to specific training sessions with several other riders. This always helps my speed, technical skills and also reminds me of just how tough cyclocross racing is, but also how much I enjoy it.”
“For me and my family, cyclocross is very special. My brother and I first started racing cyclocross over 11 years ago. My mum gets through a lot of washing powder over the winter months.”
“Travel to Belgium and Holland as often as I can”
Last year, Tulett already came a few times to Belgium. And next year, it will be even more. “I really enjoy the competitive nature of European races as well as the fantastic organisation of these events. I like travelling to other countries and meeting new people.”
“This winter I am planning on racing in Belgium and Holland on many occasions. The courses are always really challenging and the atmosphere is always electric. I am passionate about cyclocross, particularly in Belgium and really enjoy racing in Europe. Watching the elite riders up and then race makes me feel motivated to be like them some day”, ends Tulett.
